The Great Neck North Middle School Art and Technology Department is dedicated to fostering creativity and innovation in students through artistic expression and technological exploration. Through the creation of various hands-on projects, students will be challenged to utilize problem-solving skills and creativity.

About Art
It is our philosophy that all of our students are artists and we strive to provide them with an enriching experience. Our courses are primarily studio based with a strong focus on the creation of artwork. Students will experiment with a variety of media, tools and techniques, engage in creative problem solving, and develop their personal sense of aesthetics. In addition students are exposed to a variety of famous artists and artistic styles. By analyzing and discussing various works, they will further develop their art vocabulary and how artists express ideas and feelings.
Course Descriptions
Art 6
Art 6 is a general broad based, art course. It is intended to involve all students at their own level in a “hands on” studio situation. The students work in a variety of art mediums, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. A range of art processes and techniques are introduced in Art 6. Opportunities for interdisciplinary art projects related to other subject areas are provided. Art history, critical analysis and the development of an art vocabulary is introduced at a basic level. The Art 6 course content is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards for the Visual Arts.
Art 7
Art 7 is a general art course that builds on the knowledge and skills developed in Art 6. It is a “hands on” studio course that delves deeper into the art curriculum. The students work in a variety of art media, both two dimensional and three dimensional. The proper use and care of art tools and materials is explained and demonstrated. Care in the planning and execution of projects is emphasized. The study of art history, critical analysis and the art vocabulary is further developed in Art 7.
The Artist’s Workshop (Art 8)
This 8th grade elective course is designed to build upon the knowledge and skills students acquired in Art 6 and Art 7 and to introduce new ones keeping in alignment with the New York State Learning Standards for Visual Art. Through this course,students will be exposed to a variety of media, subject matter and techniques. They will continue to improve their technical skills, and engage in creative problem solving while exploring the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Though this is primarily a project based course, art appreciation, art criticism and the development of an art vocabulary play an important role.
The 3-D Experience
The 3-D Experience is an elective middle school level course for 7th and 8th grade students. Students will experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create three-dimensional art. They will discuss various themes and famous works as they relate to their creations. Key terms will be covered and students will understand that many materials can be used in sculpture. Possible materials will include clay, wood, metal, cloth, paper, plaster, recycled materials, etc. Though this is primarily a project based course, art appreciation, art criticism and the development of an art vocabulary play an important role.
Photography and Art
Photography and Art is an elective middle school level course open to 7th and 8th grade students. This course focuses on the central theme of photography and all projects are tied to photography in some way. Students will complete a series of shooting assignments through which they will learn about composition and design as well as how to take interesting well lit photographs. Adobe Photoshop will be used to manipulate images and a variety of concepts and techniques will be learned through this instruction. Students will also have the opportunity to utilize ipad apps, and to create hands-on two-dimensional work related to photography.
Art 9
Art 9 is an accelerated foundation art course that is offered to qualified eighth graders that display strong potential and interest in visual art. In Art 9 students will develop and refine their artmaking skills and enhance their knowledge of art content through a series of studio projects in a variety of art media. Art appreciation, art criticism, problem solving and use of language related to art are all integral aspects of this course. Students must participate in the Art 9 Evaluation process in seventh grade in order to be considered for this elective course. The final grade in Art 9 will appear on the student’s high school transcript and is included in the total cumulative high school average.
Introduction to Film and Video
Using the latest green screen technology and video equipment, this class will introduce students to the concepts and skills required to produce high-quality professional media content. Students will gain hands-on experience working with a multiple camera set up in a real studio and an attached control room. The focus will be on critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Students will have an understanding of all the key roles involved in producing a variety of live productions from conception to production, including talk shows, variety shows, commercials, TV news, and game shows. Students will utilize NewTek hardware and software to take advantage of virtual sets and backgrounds.

Through hands-on learning and real-world applications, students gain practical experience in using tools and technologies. It promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation, helping students to understand and navigate the ever changing world around them. Additionally, technology education builds confidence and adaptability, assisting students in their journey as lifelong learners.
Course Descriptions
Technology 7
In our 7th Grade Technology Education class, students dive into a hands-on project where they design and build their own compressed air cars. This course introduces key concepts in engineering, and design. Students learn to use various tools and materials safely and apply critical thinking to solve design challenges. By the end of the course, students will have created a functional, innovative vehicle, gaining valuable skills in teamwork, creativity, and practical technology application. This course meets everyday for 1 quarter.
Technology 8
In our 8th Grade Technology Education class, students explore both electrical engineering and creative design through hands-on projects. They begin by experimenting with electrical snap kits to understand circuits and components, building a foundation in electronics. Students then apply that knowledge in a project where they design and create their own edge-lit acrylic signs. This project combines their newfound electrical knowledge with skills in woodworking, digital design, and laser cutting, providing students with a valuable experience in both technology and craftsmanship. This course meets everyday for 1 quarter.
Blazers Live
About Blazers Live
Blazers Live is North Middle School's daily live morning news broadcast. A student crew produces each show, including school stories, a sports report, weather forecast, birthday announcements and more. Utilizing our school's television studio and the professional equipment therein, the students learn collaboration, time management, self-efficacy, and pride as they present their work to an audience of 1,000 students and faculty each day. Roles include on-air presenters and behind the scenes technical operators. Start time is 7:30 am every morning.
