The Great Neck North Middle School Mathematics Department is committed to the belief that because all students have talent, they will become creative problem solvers, experience success in their math classes, and ultimately become productive members of our increasingly complex society.
BECOMING BETTER AT MATH MEANS DEVELOPING A MATHEMATICAL MIND!
The Standards for Mathematical Practice demand that all students:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
In order to build these habits, it is critical for parents, teachers and students to work together constantly. In particular, it is critical for students to set aside time to study every night, do homework, and attend extra help as soon as they experience any difficulties with their assignments. Parents can support these efforts by speaking to their children about what is taking place in their math class, checking their homework, reviewing their test grades and communicating with their teachers when problems are detected.
